One farmhouse, three generations
Il Bagatto opened in 1964. It was opened by Franco Tappa, then aged 23, together with his mother, Maria Rossi, who was the cook in those early years.
In 1971 Franco married Franca Poggio, and from then on she ran the kitchen, until just a few years ago. Today the tradition carries on with their daughter, Stefania.
When it started out, the farmhouse had a carriage entrance, a cowshed and a portico, with the hayloft on the floor above. Those same bricks and vaults are still our dining rooms today.
“Cibus bonus et vinum verum laetificant cor hominum.” Good food and honest wine gladden the hearts of men. Il Bagatto's motto, from the family's very first leaflet.
Franco and Maria
Franco Tappa, aged 23, opens Il Bagatto with his mother Maria Rossi at the stove.
Franco and Franca
Franco marries Franca Poggio: the kitchen passes to her, and she runs it for decades.
Stefania
Their daughter Stefania carries on the same cooking, in the same house.
Why “Il Bagatto”
The name comes from tarot cards. While they were planning the restaurant with the architect, one day they came across the Bagatto card, the Magician: they looked at it and decided that was the right name.
Ever since, the Bagatto, with his wide-brimmed hat and raised glass, has been the emblem of the house.
